What is Anti-Phishing? For that matter, what is phishing?

Phishing generally refers to e-mail messages that appear to come from trusted companies, but then attempt to direct you to a fake website where you are asked to provide sensitive personal information (passwords, account numbers, credit card numbers, and so on). This information can then be used by the creators of the website to commit identity fraud. Phishing emails are designed to appear legitimate, and the websites often look identical to the legitimate company's website. Phishing attacks are not limited to email, however; they can also occur through instant messaging, in web pop-ups, or through spyware programs that may have been secretly installed on your PC. Yes, it's awful and we wish it didn't ever happen. But since it can and does, protect yourself with the free CA Internet Security Suite that you're entitled to as an Insight Broadband customer. The new anti-phishing feature identifies scams, applications, or communications that aim to steal your personal or financial data so you don’t innocently fall for them.

What is CA Website Inspector?

CA Website Inspector helps protect you from phishing attacks, Internet fraud attempts, and malicious websites. It provides a browser toolbar that allows you to verify the identity of the website you are visiting, and offers an easy-to-understand risk assessment that tells you whether it's safe to visit the site, or send personal information to the site. CA Website Inspector also checks any links received in email, instant messenger and office applications, and verifies whether the sites they link to are safe.

What is the CA Link Advisor?

The CA Link Advisor is another component of CA Website Inspector designed to keep you safe and informed while using the Internet. It works within your email, instant messenger, and office applications to show you vital information about the sites behind the links you intend to visit, before you even click on the link. It evaluates every link and provides you with the following information:

  • Which site will you really visit.
  • Which company stands behind the site.
  • Whether it's safe to deal with the site.
  • Whether there are any known risks to visiting the site.

If I already have anti-virus and anti-spyware software, do I need a firewall?

YES. CA Personal Firewall stops unauthorized access and hides your PC from possible hacker attacks. Firewalls protect you from things that anti-virus software and anti-spyware software are not designed to find.

Anti-virus software detects and removes viruses, while anti-spyware software detects and removes spyware, adware, and other non-viral malicious code. Accordingly, CA Personal Firewall is the perfect complement to anti-virus and anti-spyware software, providing a key component of a multilayered security strategy.

Why do I need anti-spyware software?

Spyware can lead to anything from PC crashes to increased spam to identity theft. These threats are rapidly proliferating and represent a major security and privacy risk.

If I already have anti-virus software, do I need anti-spyware software?

Your anti-virus protection is important - it detects and removes viral threats. However, your PC can be infected with other dangers such as spyware. Anti-spyware software is designed to stop these threats, which have unique properties that can remain hidden in your PC and cause serious problems.

Can I block all Internet access with CA Parental Controls for only a part of the day/week?

Yes, CA's Parental Controls allow you to set daily time restrictions or create schedules for online activity using profile settings for each user.

Do CA Parental Controls filter pornographic e-mails?

CA Parental Controls only restrict access to Websites. If an e-mail contains a link to a pornographic site, the site will be filtered once the link in the e-mail is clicked on. If the e-mail contains Web information that is retrieved upon opening the message, the Website content will be filtered.

Can I block/allow sites that CA Parental Controls don't block/allow?

Individual sites can be added to the Custom Site List to be blocked or allowed and override the CA Parental Control engine. The site's address can either be added as a URL or to be considered as an entire domain. This means all sub domains and internal pages of that domain will automatically be included.

Does the CA Parental Control function start automatically?

The Parental Control feature starts automatically each time your computer is started, even if the system tray icon is not there (when it's in "hidden" mode). Also after a restart, the Parental Control feature automatically runs and starts filtering according to the Starting User settings.

How do I add more users to the Parental Control feature?

Adding users is very easy. In order to add more members or to Edit/Remove any member, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the My Kids menu and login to the administrator account.
  2. Go to 'Manager Users' under Parent Settings.
  3. Enter a member name and click start.
  4. The New User wizard will start.
  5. A new member is created with the Internet filtering policy inherited from the Default User.
  6. Next, you can define this member's settings (Image, Password, Web-Filters and Access Time Table).
  7. Once you have set all the settings for this member, click apply to save the changes.
  8. You can change the Member settings any time you like by logging into the administrator account.

What does Default User mean?

A Default User is a user that comes with predefined "factory" settings. The Parental Control feature starts with a Default User. This user will not be required to enter a password to log in to the Parental Control feature, and therefore should be defined with the most restrictive Internet filtering policy.

When creating a new user, the new user inherits the settings of the Default User, which can be modified. If you have more then one user in the system, you can make any of the users to be the Default User.

How do I temporarily disable the Parental Control feature?

If you HAVE NOT configured My Kids, then it will not filter until you configure it for the first time.

If you HAVE configured My Kids:

  1. Open the My Kids menu and select the Change User option.
  2. Select the Administrator.
  3. Enter the Administrator password.
  4. Now the Parental Control feature will work under Free Access with no filtering at all.
